GRATEFUL DEAD COMPLETE WINTERLAND 1973 10 CD

Un énorme pavé !

On ne rigole pas chez le Grateful Dead, et l’année 1973 est particulièrement choyée, voici que vient de sortir un coffret de 10CD «COMPLETE WINTERLAND 1973» reprenant en intégralité les shows des 09-10-11 Novembre 1973 + en bonus le concert du 04 Décembre de la même année.

L’année 1973 est importante dans la carrière du groupe, Pig Pen qui à bout de forces a quitté le groupe en 1972, décède le huit mars1973. Il a été remplacé par Keith Godchaux (claviers) qui intègre le groupe avec son épouse Donna (Chant).
Pig Pen était l’élément bluesy du groupe, le plus branché sur la culture roots, l’arrivée des époux Godchaux modifie le son, d’autant qu’en 1973 Mickey Hart n’est plus là et que le groupe joue avec un seul batteur.

Le 15 octobre sort l’album Wake of the flood avec les titres

Bien sur, les morceaux ont déjà été joués en live dès 1972 pour certains, mais la sortie du disque permet à ceux qui n’ont pas vu le groupe en concert de prendre connaissance du nouveau matériel.
Le Dead a donné 72 shows en 1973, uniquement aux States, alors que l’année 1972 une tournée européenne avait eu lieu au printemps.

C’est donc dans leur salle fétiche du Winterland (60 concerts d’autant que la salle fermera le 31/12/1978) que le Dead donne trois concerts en novembre.
Bien sur les concerts sont longs, bien sur les morceaux du nouvel opus sont joués et Dark Star n’est donné qu’un seul soir (le11)

Le groupe joue merveilleusement bien, le chant de Donna adouci ceux de Weir et Garcia (qui ne sont pas de grands vocalistes), les nappes de clavier de son mari tisse un fond sonore qui permet des envolées lumineuses soutenues par une section rythmique d’une finesse incroyable.

Wheather Report Suite, Playing in the Band, here Comes Sunshine sont prétextes à des improvisations superbes (contredisant Jerry Garcia qui déclarait que 80% des impros étaient mauvaises).
Les cover de Johnny Cash (Big River), Chuck Berry (Around and Around, Johnny B Good), Kris Kristofferson (Me and Bobby Mc Gee), sont arrangés à la sauce Dead et on constate que le groupe s’approprie des chansons de musiciens faisant partie intégrante de l’histoire de la musique américaine.

Les dead freaks discutent toujours de la meilleure année, du meilleur concert, mais ce copieux coffret est indiscutablement excellent, malgré la période troublée.

Et il faut rappeler une évidence : C’est en live que le groupe donne toute sa mesure surtout dans ses salles fétiches.

eh bé bien belle collection pour les fans

quant à moi j'avoue me lasser assez vite de Dead. Je n'arrive pas à entrer vraiment dans leur univers musical ou autre ( d'ailleurs c'est marrant quand on regarde le DVD sur la vie de Peter Green de voir comment ils ont été initiés à la drogue lors de leur tournée américaine avec le Grateful Dead)

bref un disque ça va mais après je décroche

Mais bon, je ne pense pas que tu en arrives jusque là. Un ou plusieurs des 4 albums précités te suffiront largement pour te faire une idée du Dead.

Je vais y aller aussi de mon modeste conseil avec leur disque "Blues for Allah"

Je crois que le mieux pour découvrir le Dead ce sont les live.
Le groupe n' a jamais été à l'aise en studio, même si, en effet, American Beauty et Aoxomoxoa sont certainement les meilleurs.

Grosso modo on peut distinguer plusieurs périodes en live

les débuts jusqu'en 1971 où le groupe joue très psychedélique

la période 72/76 à mon sens la meilleure, mélange d'improvisations et de "classiques"

Ensuite, même si cela reste excellent on a des longueurs, les morceaux Drums/Space occupant une partie importante mais assez répétitive.
