Re: John Lee Hooker

Here is a picture of John Lee Hooker in my family’s living room that I took in 1962. It is a copy of the drugstore print made back then (see the “Jun 62” at the top of the picture)…….(God knows how many negatives I have which I have never scanned).
Anyway, here is the story of how he ended up sitting on the couch in our house when I was in high school: He came to Atlanta to perform at an event billed as the Atlanta Jazz Festival, held at the Ponce de Leon Ballpark, home of the Atlanta Crackers,my favorite baseball team ever, . I was a senior in high school, and a big fan of John Lee Hooker, and wanted to meet him. I figured that he probably got tired of eating in restaurants all the time and so decided that if I could find him, I would invite him over to my family’s house for a fried chicken dinner prepared by my mother. Atlanta was still segregated at that time, so I knew he had to be staying at one of the hotels on Auburn Avenue (birthplace and burial place of MLK). I figured he was probably staying at the best, which was not very fancy, so a friend, fellow blues nut, Roger Brown, and I went to the hotel and asked the employees behind the desk in the lobby if Hooker was staying there. He was; we asked for his room number; they readily gave it to us; and soon, we were knocking on Hooker’s door. In another moment, we were in his room. Hooker was sitting on the bed strumming hs guitar and watching Tarzan on a tiny TV set. He accepted the invitation, and when it was time, we picked him up, brought him to my family’s house, where he seemed to enjoy my mother’s fried chicken. Then, having a seat on the couch, he actually gave us a brief private concert, and then shot the shit with Roger and me a good while...............It was near the end of my senior year, and my high school fraternity was having a party out in the suburbs, and I asked John Lee if he might be willing to play at the party, though the pay to whatever musician we hired was only fifty dollars. He accepted that invitation too, and were a lot of high school seniors thrilled when he walked in and proceeded to play for a long time. Afterwards, classmates brought out their yearbooks, asking Hooker to sign them, which he did, many times. His biggest hit had just been issued, and he signed the yearbooks “BOOM-BOOM, John Lee Hooker.” Such a nice man!

Re: John Lee Hooker
Jungleland a écrit:
Get Back Home (1969)

" I need some money, honey ". L'harmoniciste a disparu.
" Shake it baby ".
" I can't get no satisfaction ".
